York Cocoa Works is running a Halloween Chocolate Treat Making session from 17 October to 1 November, and it's a self-led one, so you work through it at your own pace rather than following a class. The idea is simple: you get to craft your own Halloween chocolate treat and take it home. It's aimed at families and anyone with a soft spot for chocolate who wants to get into the spooky spirit a bit early.
It's worth remembering that York is known as 'The Chocolate City', and for good reason. The city's confectionery history goes back centuries—in 1646, John Reilly was awarded freemanship of the city as a 'Confectioner', a new profession that helped establish York as a chocolate centre. Some of the world's best-known brands started right here: Rowntree's gave us Kit Kat, Smarties and Aero; Terry's came up with the Chocolate Orange and All Gold; and Craven's produced French Almonds and Mary Ann Toffees. That heritage still runs through the city, too—Mary Craven's Coppergate factory has been making boiled sweets like mint humbugs since 1854.
