Improvised comedy performance by the Yorkshire-based troupe Fool(ish), featuring surreal sketches and audience-inspired scenes in a cabaret-style setting.
Fool(ish) Improv are taking up residency at the York Theatre Royal this autumn, with three dates in the Studio: October 10, 11, and 22. They're a Yorkshire-based improv troupe led by Paul Birch, and the residency is part of The Old Paint Shop season, which transforms the Studio into a cabaret club for the run. The whole season is dedicated to Terry Bounds, a former stage carpenter at the theatre.
If you're not familiar with them, Fool(ish) bring American long-form comedy to York, having trained under Chicago teachers. They describe their style as "not so much Whose Line Is It Anyway but more Whose Lie Is It Anyway", and the focus is on surreal sketches and sensational scenes rather than quick-fire games. They're as comfortable in a library as they are on a theatre stage, so they're used to playing to different kinds of rooms.
Much of what happens on stage comes from the audience. They'll ask you for secrets, tales, and memories, and use those to build the night as they go. It's spontaneous, shambolic, and joyful comedy, and because it's built from the room, no two shows end up the same. If you've got a good story to share, it might just end up as a scene.
