Chamber music duo Duo Léger make their UK debut performing opera and reimagined pop songs in York.
Duo Léger make their UK debut at Holy Trinity Goodramgate on Thursday 30 July, their first show on this side of the Channel. The chamber duo is made up of opera singer Shawn Mlynek, based in Germany, and harpist Eleonora Congiu, based in Belgium. They formed in 2021 and have spent the last few years building a reputation across Europe and the US, with critics describing their work as a 'harmonious musical collaboration'.
The set for the York debut covers a fair bit of ground. It starts with songs from the Renaissance and selections from the Italian Baroque, then moves into Czech folk songs, before ending with pop songs from the 1950s and 60s reimagined for tenor and harp. It's a wide sweep of repertoire to fit into one evening, and the pop songs are the part that really sets the night apart from a standard classical recital.
The show comes by invitation from the Churches Conservation Trust, and the venue is a personal choice for Mlynek. He visited York as a tourist last summer and took a liking to the city, saying, 'Between the architecture and history, the city had a character that was very special to me'. He decided the church was the right spot after hearing the acoustics during a production of Shakespeare's The Tempest.
