A new stage adaptation of Victoria Wood's comedy classic Dinnerladies, starring Les Dennis and directed by Sean Foley.
Dinnerladies is coming to the Grand Opera House in York from 23 to 27 February 2027. It's a new stage adaptation of Victoria Wood's comedy classic, and it's part of a UK tour running throughout 2027. This is the first project commissioned by the Victoria Wood Estate, so it's a bit more than just a revival.
If you're coming to it from the original, you'll recognise the setting: the canteen of HWD Components, a fictional factory in Manchester. The show brings back the ensemble of characters that made the sitcom work — Bren, Tony, Dolly, Anita, Jean, Twinkle, Philippa and Stan — and the same sort of workplace comedy that built the original. The sitcom itself ran on the BBC from 1998 to 2000, two series and 16 episodes in total, and picked up the British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy in 2000. Wood wrote, directed and starred in it, and this stage version is the first time the story has moved from the screen to the theatre.
Les Dennis takes the role of Stan, the factory worker, and he's known from Coronation Street and Only Fools and Horses The Musical. The production is directed by Sean Foley, a double Olivier Award winner, and adapted for the stage by Beth and Emma Kilcoyne. It's a family-friendly comedy, so it works as a night out for adults who remember the original or for anyone who just likes a good ensemble piece.
