A drop-in family art workshop where participants create their own printed sea monsters using Japanese woodblock print techniques.
York Art Gallery is hosting Creative Families: Sea Monsters on Friday 14 August, a drop-in family workshop that runs from 10:30am to 3:30pm. It's part of the Creative Families programme, and it's open to all ages, so it works whether you're bringing toddlers or older kids.
The whole session is built around making your own printed sea monster, and the starting point is the strange and wonderful creatures found in Japanese woodblock prints. If you've seen those, you'll know they often feature creatures that are half-fish, half-something-else, and that's the kind of thing you'll be drawing on. You'll experiment with simple relief printing techniques to design your monster and then print it out, so you'll leave with something you've actually made rather than just a sketch.
Because it's a drop-in, there's no need to book a slot or arrive right at the start. You can turn up whenever suits your day between 10:30am and 3:30pm, stay for as long as you like, and head off when you're done. It's a good one for a summer afternoon when you're already out in the city and want something to keep the kids occupied for a bit.
