A family workshop where visitors create their own printed sea monster inspired by Japanese woodblock prints using relief printing techniques.
York Art Gallery is hosting a family workshop called Creative Families: Sea Monsters on Friday 24 July, from 10:30am to 3:30pm. It's a drop-in session, so you don't need to be there right at the start — you can just turn up whenever suits you during the day and get stuck in.
The whole thing is built around Japanese woodblock prints, which are famous for their strange and wonderful sea creatures. You'll be using those as your starting point to design and print your own sea monster. The technique they're teaching is relief printing, a simple way of carving or cutting a design into a surface and then printing from it. It's the same basic principle behind those woodblock prints, so you'll be working in the same tradition as the artists that inspired the session.
Because it's a drop-in, it's easy to fit around a summer day out. It's open to all ages, so it works whether you're coming with young kids or just bringing a group of different ages together. You'll spend your time experimenting with the relief printing process — designing your monster, getting it onto the block, and then printing it out. You don't need to bring anything with you, and you don't need any prior experience with printing to take part.

The workshop is held at York Art Gallery, Exhibition Square, York YO1 7EW, and it's included in general admission, so there's no extra cost on top of your entry to the gallery. It runs from 10:30am to 3:30pm on Friday 24 July.
