A drop-in family art activity where participants create their own samurai character using simple relief printing techniques, inspired by Japanese woodblock prints.
Creative Families: Samurai Portraits is at York Art Gallery on Friday 21 August, from 10.30am to 3.30pm. It's part of the gallery's Creative Families series, a run of family workshops that run alongside the current exhibition, Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print.
The session takes its cue from that exhibition. You'll start by imagining and creating your own samurai character, drawing on the warriors and heroes that feature in Japanese woodblock prints. From there, you'll experiment with simple relief printing techniques to design and print your samurai. It's a hands-on way of working through the same process that the prints in the gallery were made with, so you get to see how the technique actually works rather than just looking at the finished pieces on the wall.
It's a drop-in session, which is the best part for a family day out: you can turn up whenever suits you between 10.30am and 3.30pm and stay for as long or as little as you like, rather than committing to a fixed slot. It's open to all ages, so it works whether you're bringing small children or older kids who can handle the printing on their own. There's no need to book in advance, either—just show up when you're ready.
