A family workshop where visitors design their own motif inspired by Japanese textiles and woodblock prints, then experiment with simple relief printing techniques.
York Art Gallery is running a family workshop called Creative Families: Pattern Prints on Friday 7 August, from 10:30am to 3:30pm. It's a drop-in session, so you can turn up whenever suits you during the day rather than committing to a set time.
The whole thing is built around Japanese textiles and woodblock prints. You start by designing your own motif, drawing on the patterns you'll see in the gallery, and then you move on to the printing itself. They'll show you how to use simple relief printing techniques to turn that single motif into a full pattern, so you'll leave with something you've actually made rather than just a sketch on a page.
It's part of the gallery's Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print exhibition, so if you're already planning to go and see the prints, this is a good way to spend a bit more time with them. The session is open to all ages, so it works as well for a toddler as it does for a teenager, and you can work on it together.
