A drop-in family art workshop where visitors design their own motif inspired by Japanese textiles and woodblock prints using relief printing techniques.
York Art Gallery is running a family workshop called Creative Families: Pattern Prints on Friday 28 August, from 10.30am to 3.30pm. It's a drop-in session, so you can turn up whenever suits you during the day rather than committing to a fixed start time.
The whole thing is built around Japanese textiles and woodblock prints. You'll start by designing your own motif, taking a cue from the patterns found in those traditions, and then move on to relief printing. Relief printing is one of the oldest ways of making prints: you carve or cut away the parts of a block that you don't want to print, so the ink only sits on the raised surface. From there, you'll experiment with how to repeat that motif to build your own pattern, and print it out to take home.
It's a family activity, and they've made it clear it's suitable for all ages, so it works as well for a toddler as it does for a teenager. Because it's a drop-in, you don't need to worry about arriving exactly on the dot—you can just pop in when you're ready and get stuck in.
