Costume Sewing Group

The Costume Sewing Group is back at YTR Costume Hire on Wednesday 8 July, the first of five fortnightly sessions running through the summer. It's a drop-in for volunteer sewers, run by Chloe Moore at the theatre's costume hire facility in Osbaldwick, and it's open to all skill levels, so you don't need to be an expert to get involved.

The work is practical and behind-the-scenes: maintaining and repairing the theatre's costume stock, updating the collection, and keeping things running for York Theatre Royal. It's the kind of steady, useful work that keeps a costume department on its feet, and since it's a drop-in, you can come along when it suits you rather than committing to every single date. You'll be provided with a sewing machine and a basic kit, so you don't need to bring your own gear.

Beyond the sewing, it's a social thing. The group is as much about the people as the stitches, and it's a chance to pick up new skills while working alongside others. If you've always wanted to see how a professional costume department operates from the inside, this is a way in.

The sessions run every other Wednesday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, starting 8 July and continuing 22 July, 5 August, 19 August, and 2 September. They're free to join, and you'll find them at YTR Costume Hire, Unit 3, Birch Court, Osbaldwick, Link Road, York, YO19 5JA.
