York Castle Museum is bringing back the Castle Kitchen for the October half-term, with live seasonal cooking demonstrations running on Saturday 24, Monday 26, and Wednesday 28 October. This year they're making Soul Cakes, those small, sweet-spiced cakes that have a long history around Halloween. If you're already planning a visit to the museum, it's a nice thing to drift into between galleries.
Soul Cakes aren't just a seasonal treat, though. They're a bit of a tradition in their own right: in Christian traditions, they're described as a symbol of community and remembrance, and used as offerings to commemorate the dead. The demonstrations run throughout the day, so you can pop in whenever suits you rather than working around a fixed start time. You'll get to see them being made, and you can try tasty samples while you're there. If you fancy making them yourself, there's a QR code on display to scan so you can take the recipe home.

You'll find the Castle Kitchen just off the Secrets of Dress gallery, inside the museum at the Eye of York, York North Yorkshire YO1 9RY. The demonstrations run from 10:30am to 4:00pm on those three days, and they're included in general admission, so there's no extra cost if you've already got your ticket for the museum.
