A traditional carol service by candlelight performed by the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir in the historic Holy Trinity Church.
The York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir are performing carols by candlelight at Holy Trinity Goodramgate on Saturday 12 December. It's a male voice choir, so it's just the men singing, and the whole thing is set in one of the city's older churches.
The choir has been around since 1925, built on a shared love of music and singing. Over the years they've played some of the bigger stages across the UK and Europe, with the Royal Albert Hall, Castle Howard, York Castle Museum and York Minster all on their list. This one is a bit different from those larger halls, though: the church is 800 years old, and they'll have 150 candles lit throughout the building. You'll be sitting in the historic fixed box pews, so it's a proper old-school church setting.
It's a Christmas concert, so the programme is carols. The choir's long history means they've done their fair share of these, and the candlelight is a big part of the evening's setup. If you're not used to male voice choirs, it's a distinct sound—all the voices in the same range, which gives it a particular weight and texture compared to a mixed choir.
