A series of free lectures on history, religion, theology and heritage presented by experts at York Minster, marking the 800th anniversary of St William of York.
York Minster is hosting its Autumn Lecture Series on Tuesday evenings from 15 September to 13 October 2026, with each session starting at 6.30pm. It's a run of free lectures on history, religion, theology and heritage, all given by experts inside the Minster itself. The series is part of the celebrations for St William of York, marking 800 years since he became the city's own saint.
If you've spent any time in the city, you know the Minster is one of the world's most magnificent cathedrals, a masterpiece in stained glass and stone that's been at the centre of Christianity in the north of England since the 7th century. It's still a thriving church, with choral Evensong sung Tuesday to Sunday during term time by the Choir of York Minster. Among its highlights are the Great East Window, the single largest expanse of stained glass in the country, and the Chapter House, an octagonal space dating from the 1280s and the earliest known example of a vaulted ceiling supported by roof timbers rather than a central column. The Crypt is the oldest and holiest space, the resting place of St William of York, the city's patron saint.

The lectures run on Tuesday nights from 15 September through to 13 October, with each one starting at 6.30pm at York Minster, Deangate, York, YO1 7HH. They're free to attend, so you can drop in for one or follow the whole series over the five weeks.
