Art Outdoors: Make a Splash

Art Outdoors: Make a Splash is running at York Art Gallery on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August, the final weekend of a summer that's seen it pop up every other Thursday since 23 July. It's an outdoor play activity set in the Artist Garden, the gallery's own outdoor space tucked directly behind the main building in the Museum Gardens, so you'll find it on Museum Street, YO1 7FR.

The whole thing takes its cue from Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print, the exhibition currently showing inside the gallery. The idea is to get you experimenting with mark-making techniques and just playing and creating, so it's more about the process than the finished product. It's an all-ages session, which means it works as well for a family afternoon as it does for anyone who just wants to spend a bit of time making something.

Because it's an outdoor activity, it's weather-dependent. If the rain sets in, the session moves indoors, and that's when general admission charges apply. On the days it stays outside in the garden, it's free. It's a drop-in between 11am and 4pm, so you don't need to be there right at the start to get involved—you can just turn up whenever suits you across the day.

If you've already seen Making Waves inside, this is a nice way to take what you've looked at and actually try it out yourself. If you haven't, it's a good excuse to do both in one go. The Artist Garden is a quiet spot right in the heart of the Museum Gardens, and since it's a drop-in, you can keep it as short or as long as you like. It's free, it's for all ages, and it runs from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August.
