Art Outdoors: Make a Splash

Art Outdoors: Make a Splash is running at York Art Gallery this summer, with sessions every fortnight on Thursdays from 23 July to 20 August, and then on Saturday and Sunday 29-30 August. It's a drop-in, so you can turn up whenever suits you between 11am and 4pm.

The whole thing takes place in the Artist Garden, which sits in York Museum Gardens directly behind the gallery. It's an outdoor play session, and the prompt comes from Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print, the exhibition the gallery is running. The idea is to get you into the garden to experiment with mark-making techniques and just create something of your own.

It's part of a wider summer programme at the gallery, so there's plenty more to pick from if you're in the area. There are storytelling sessions with Story Craft Theatre, family workshops, and a live Mokuhanga printmaking demonstration by printmakers Andy and Naomi. Professor Helen Smith is giving a series of talks, and the whole thing wraps up with a closing weekend festival of music, workshops and food in York Museum Gardens.

Make a Splash is free, though it's weather dependent: if the rain sets in, it might move indoors, and that's when general admission charges apply. Otherwise, it's a drop-in between 11am and 4pm on those Thursdays and the final weekend.
