Arnup Studios

Arnup Studios are showing at Pyramid Gallery on Stonegate, their first collective exhibition, and it's running from today until 27 September. It brings together six artists from the collective: Hannah Arnup, Michelle Galloway, Liz Foster, Kate Pettitt, Penny Phillips and Emma Welsh. The work on the walls is a broad mix — landscape and abstract paintings, ceramic wildlife sculpture, stoneware pottery and handmade jewellery — so it's the kind of show where you can wander from one medium to another in a single room.

There's a fair bit of history behind it. The collective is based in Holtby, just outside York, and the connection with Pyramid Gallery goes back to the 1990s, when the gallery first showed work by the sculptors Mick and Sally Arnup, alongside their children Ben, Tobias and Hannah. After inheriting the studios, Hannah redesigned the space to support individual artists and craftspeople, keeping her parents' artistic legacy going while opening it up to others.

Hannah herself is a good place to start if you're wondering about the background: she studied Fine Art Sculpture at Kingston School of Art and Post-Graduate Ceramics at Goldsmiths College, and her own work is part of the mix here. The exhibition is a first for the collective as a whole, and with the six of them showing together, you get a sense of the different practices working under one roof.

It's open at Pyramid Gallery on Stonegate, running through to 27 September, so there's plenty of time to drop in if you're around the centre over the next few weeks.
