An Evening with Oyinkan Braithwaite: Celebrating the launch of Cursed Daughters

Oyinkan Braithwaite is coming to Merchant Adventurers' Hall on Wednesday 15 July, for an evening celebrating the launch of her new novel, Cursed Daughters. It's a full session: she'll talk about the book, there's a discussion and a Q&A with the audience, and a book signing to finish on. And every guest gets a copy of Cursed Daughters as part of the night.

Braithwaite is a Nigerian-British novelist. Her debut, My Sister, the Serial Killer (2018), did a fair bit of heavy lifting for her: it was a New York Times bestseller, longlisted for the Booker Prize, and shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction. It also picked up Crime Fiction Book of the Year at the 2020 British Book Awards. Cursed Daughters came out on 2 July, so this is one of its first outings.

The story follows Eniiyi, a calm and rational woman who looks so much like her late aunt, Monife, that her family is convinced she's a reincarnation. From there, it's a journey of falling in love and being forced to face a mysterious, long-standing family curse. If you've read her first book, you'll know she has a knack for taking a strange, unsettling premise and working it out with a very steady hand.

It runs from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at Merchant Adventurers' Hall, The Hall, Fossgate, York, YO1 9XD. Between the talk, the Q&A, and the signing, you'll have plenty of time to hear her talk through the new book and get your own copy signed.
