Alice Roberts for The Goddess Queen

Professor Alice Roberts is coming to The Citadel on Wednesday 2 September, with the evening built around her first novel, The Goddess Queen. It's a reimagining of the story of Cleopatra and Mark Antony, blending ancient history with politics, power and ambition.

If you know Roberts from the screen, you'll recognise her as an academic, author and broadcaster specialising in human anatomy, physiology, evolution, archaeology and history. She made her television debut on Channel 4's Time Team back in 2001 and has since written and presented The Incredible Human Journey, Origins of Us and Ice Age Giants on BBC2, as well as the series Digging for Britain. She's been Professor of Public Engagement with Science at the University of Birmingham since 2012.

While she's well known for her non-fiction, The Goddess Queen is a different kind of project. She's written several non-fiction books, including The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being, which was shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize in 2015, and the Sunday Times bestsellers Ancestors, Buried, Crypt and Domination. This evening draws on the novel, so it's a chance to hear her talk about the history and the storytelling behind it.

Chairing the conversation is novelist Joanne Harris, who's written twenty novels and three cookbooks and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and an OBE recipient. The talk is at The Citadel (York City Church) on Gillygate, YO31 7EA, starting at 7pm with doors open from 6.30pm.
