The Aesthetica Art Prize returns to York Art Gallery, celebrating its twentieth year as an international platform for contemporary art with 20 finalists.
The Aesthetica Art Prize returns to York Art Gallery on 17 July, this time under the title States of Becoming. It's the twentieth year the prize has run, and it's grown into a proper international platform for contemporary art, so this anniversary edition feels like a bit of a milestone for the whole thing.
Inside you'll find work from 20 finalists, chosen from a longlist of 175 artists. The pieces they're working with cover a wide range of ground — environment, identity, and culture are the big themes running through the selection. And they're not sticking to one way of doing it, either: there's photography, film, installation, painting, and digital media all in the same space, so you'll see a good mix of styles and formats rather than just one thing on the walls.
It's an exhibition that's open to everyone — whether you're a regular at the gallery, a collector, or just someone who likes contemporary art. The finalists come from all over, so it's a decent cross-section of what's happening in the art world right now, rather than just a local affair.

The show runs from 17 July to 15 November, so it's on for a good few months if you can't make it in the first few weeks. You'll find it in the Upper North gallery, on the first floor of York Art Gallery.
