An adult theatre workshop exploring the concept of the Greek chorus, inspired by Margaret Atwood's 'The Penelopiad', open to all levels of experience.
York Theatre Royal is running an adult theatre workshop this autumn, and it's all about the Greek chorus. The sessions kick off on Monday 21 September at De Grey House, and they run right through to 30 November, with one break on 26 October. It's a proper term-long thing, not just a one-off, so it's more of a commitment than a single evening out.
This term's focus takes its lead from Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad, which will be running in the main house later in the autumn. The sessions use that as a springboard to look at the Greek chorus — the group of performers who speak together as one. They'll be exploring how the chorus works as the collective voice of a play, the way it provides background information and underscores the moral themes, and how it bridges the gap between the actors on stage and the audience watching. It's a chance to get under the bonnet of one of theatre's oldest devices and see how it actually functions in a production.

One of the best bits is that it's open to everyone, regardless of experience. You don't need to have stepped foot on a stage before to join in, so it's as much for someone who's never done theatre as it is for someone who's been in a few local productions. The sessions run on Monday nights, starting at 8:00pm, and they'll be held at De Grey House throughout the term.
