A special selling exhibition showcasing 16 selected artisans specialising in jewellery and silver, curated by Joanne Gowan with talks by Susan Rumfitt.
Acquire at Ampleforth runs from 18 to 20 September at Ampleforth Abbey (YO62 4EN), a selling exhibition that brings together 16 selected artisans specialising in jewellery and silver. It's curated by fine artist and jeweller Joanne Gowan, who has drawn on makers predominantly from Yorkshire and the North of England. The exhibition is free to enter, so you can wander through and see the work without spending a penny unless something catches your eye.
Beyond the displays, there's a daily programme of ticketed talks led by jewellery specialist Susan Rumfitt, who you'll recognise from her appearances on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow. If you're into the craft side of things, that's where the real detail is. The talks are £35 for one or £50 for two, so you can pick and choose how much you want to dive in.
The setting itself is worth a mention. Ampleforth Abbey has been home to a community of Benedictine monks since 1802, the largest such community in the UK, living by the Gospel and the Rule of St Benedict across 1,200 acres of North Yorkshire countryside in the Howardian Hills National Landscape. The Abbey Church was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott and is filled with furniture, sculpture and glass by skilled craftspeople, including the local oak furniture maker Robert Thompson. The grounds stretch out to lakes and woodland, and the Abbey Orchard is one of the largest commercial orchards in the North of England, with cider pressed in the monastery's own Cider Mill. It's a place where craft has always had a home, so it fits the occasion.
