Acosta Danza presents a double bill of Baroque-inspired contemporary dance, featuring the world premiere of 'Pearls' by Andonis Foniadakis and 'Chacona' by Goyo Montero, curated by Carlos Acosta.
Acosta Danza are coming to York Theatre Royal from Thursday 1 October to Saturday 3 October with Cuban Baroque, a double bill curated by Carlos Acosta. It's the company's first visit to the theatre, and they're opening the show with a world premiere.
The first half is Pearls, by Andonis Foniadakis, which gets its world premiere here. It's built around a chaconne — a looping structure that repeats and builds — set to a live performance of Esteban Sallas’ Salve Regina. The piece shifts from Baroque lyricism into a more driving Cuban energy, and because it's a world premiere, York is one of the first places it'll be seen.
The second half is Chacona, by Goyo Montero. This one was originally created for the Staatstheater Nürnberg Ballett and is set to the final movement of Bach’s Partita No. 2 in D Minor for violin, accompanied by guitar and piano. It's described as a physically and musically demanding work that needs total cohesion from the ensemble of 16 dancers to pull it off.

Taken together, Cuban Baroque blends the artistry of the Baroque period with the energy of Cuban dance, and Acosta describes the programme as a fusion of classical, Cuban, and contemporary vocabularies. The two pieces share a common thread in their structure — the chaconne — and both lean on Baroque music, though they approach it from different angles. It runs from Thursday 1 October to Saturday 3 October in the Main House at York Theatre Royal.
