Skedaddle Theatre bring A Brief Case of Crazy to the York Theatre Royal on Saturday 26 September, playing in the Chapman Studio. It's an award-winning romantic physical comedy, put together in collaboration with Shoddy Theatre and the venue itself, and it's told entirely without words. Instead of a script, the story runs on choreography, mime, clowning and puppetry.
The plot is a simple one: Thomas is an awkward, introverted office worker who harbours a quiet crush on his shy colleague, Daisy. His quest for love gets complicated by a boisterous boss named Simon and a rather bothersome briefcase. It's the sort of setup that works best when the comedy comes from the physical rather than the spoken, and that's exactly where this sits.
The show draws on the silent-film genius of Mr Bean, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, so if you're a fan of that kind of slapstick, you'll recognise the territory. It's written, directed and performed by Rowan Armitt-Brewster, a familiar face at York Theatre Royal, who carries the whole thing on his own. The company describes it as theatre that's both entertaining and deeply human, embracing the ridiculous alongside the heartfelt.
