Hands-on engineering challenges where students aged 8-10 build and test creative solutions in the STEM Olympics, part of MOSI's homeschool SEED program.
The Museum of Science and Industry is hosting the STEM Olympics in Tampa, with two sessions to choose from: Tuesday, January 5, and Thursday, January 7, 2027. Both run from 1 PM to 3 PM. It's a hands-on engineering day for students, built around a series of challenges where they build and test their own creative solutions. The whole thing is framed as an Olympics, so the kids aren't just following a set of instructions—they're designing, testing, and refining their work as they go.
The STEM Olympics is part of the museum's SEED program, which stands for Homeschool Science Experience Enrichment Days. It's a monthly series of hands-on classes designed specifically for homeschoolers, meant to complement a homeschool curriculum through explorations of STEAM—science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. The sessions are for students only, with a minimum age of 8, so it's a space for the kids to work through the challenges themselves.
If you're homeschooling and looking for a way to get your kids out of the house and into something tactile, this fits the bill. The focus is on the doing—building things with your hands and seeing how they hold up under pressure—rather than just reading about it in a textbook. Since it's part of a monthly series, it's one of several opportunities the museum offers throughout the year for homeschool families in the area.
