Bassist and composer Alejandro Arenas leads an all-star band on a multicultural musical journey reflecting his immigrant experience.
Alejandro Arenas brings Mixtura: A Multicultural Journey in Sound to the New Tampa Performing Arts Center on Sunday, November 1. It's part of the New Tampa Unplugged series, and Arenas, a bassist and composer who's become a staple of the Tampa Bay jazz scene, is leading an all-star band for the afternoon.
Mixtura is a reflection of Arenas's own immigrant experience. He spent more than two decades living in Colombia and more than two decades in the U.S., and the concert draws on those years through original compositions and arrangements that encapsulate his cultural and personal influences. The band around him leans into that same theme: it's made up of fellow U.S. immigrants and Americans who have lived outside the country.
The show runs from 3 PM to 5 PM, so it's a Sunday afternoon thing rather than a late night. Inside the venue, the floor is set up with tables and chairs, with elevated rows of theater seats behind them.
