Exhibition of Jim Dine's collaborative prints and sculpture editions created at USF Graphicstudio between 1973 and 1989, exploring his symbolic motifs.
Jim Dine is on view at USF Graphicstudio from September 8 through December 18, in an exhibition titled Swaying in the Florida Night. It's a gathering of the collaborative prints and sculpture editions he made right here at the studio between 1973 and 1989, so it's a look at a specific stretch of his career that happened on this ground.
If you're not familiar, Dine is a multimedia artist whose work spans painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, poetry, and performance. Printmaking has always been a place of experimentation for him, and this show pulls together the prints and sculpture editions he produced at Graphicstudio over those sixteen years. The pieces draw on the symbolic motifs he's used throughout his career: bathrobes, skulls, hearts, and classical sculpture. The robe stood in for himself and the heart for his wife, Nancy, and over time that vocabulary grew to cover broader, more universal and spiritual themes. Now 91, he's still creating and exhibiting art globally.
Because these were collaborative prints, the show offers a look at how he worked with the studio's printers and technicians to bring them to life. There's a reception on October 16 from 5 to 8 PM that opens up the studio's production areas to visitors, so you can see where the work actually happens.
