Homeschool workshop to learn traditional indigo dyeing, create patterns on fabric and take home a hand-dyed towel, gift bag and T-shirt.
Cracker Country is hosting an Indigo Dyeing Workshop for homeschoolers ages 10-18 on Wednesday, April 28, 2027, from 11 AM to 12:45 PM. It's part of their homeschool program, and the whole thing takes place inside the Florida State Fairgrounds at 4800 N US Highway 301 in Tampa. If you're driving in, enter via Orient Road.
The session is hands-on from the start. Students learn the traditional art of indigo dyeing by folding, twisting, or binding fabric to create their own patterns, then dipping it into a rich indigo vat. After the dyeing is done, the group tours two of the museum's historic homes to see how indigo was grown, processed, and used in early Florida. It's a good way to connect the craft they just did with the actual history behind it.
Everyone walks away with a few things they made themselves: a small hand-dipped indigo towel, a gift bag folded or wrapped in a pattern of their choice, and a cotton T-shirt dyed with their own design. It's a decent haul for a morning's work.

Cracker Country itself is a rural Florida living history museum on the fairgrounds, dedicated to preserving and interpreting rural life in the late 19th century. The workshop fits right into that—taking an old-school craft and letting kids actually do it rather than just reading about it. It's open to homeschoolers ages 10 to 18, and guardians are free but required to stay on the property. Tickets are $25 per student, and you'll need to buy them online in advance. Registration closes April 21 at 4 PM, or whenever tickets sell out. Parking is free via Orient Road.
