14th Integrated Mathematical Oncology workshop, a hands-on modelling experience where teams of researchers develop patient-specific digital twins for cancer.
IMO Workshop 14: Digital Twins runs from Sunday, November 1 to Friday, November 6 at the Moffitt Cancer Center, in the Stabile Research Building at 12902 Magnolia Drive. It's the 14th edition of the Integrated Mathematical Oncology workshop, put on by the IMO Department at Moffitt, and this year the focus is on mechanistic digital twins for cancer.
It's set up as a hands-on modeling experience that mixes education and competition. Teams of clinical, experimental, and theoretical researchers work together to build mechanistic, patient-specific digital twins across a range of cancers and then present their results. The winning team takes home an Amazon gift voucher and a $50,000 pilot grant from Moffitt Cancer Center, with a voucher for the runners-up and deluxe travel awards for participants coming from out of town. A 'speed dating for scientists' session breaks the ice at the start, and working group sessions fill the middle days.
Moffitt's Center for Evolutionary Therapy has been working in this space for a long time, developing evolutionary and 'multistrike' therapies and using the term 'virtual patient' well before 'digital twin' became the common framing. Their work has centered on prostate cancer, but it also covers skin, ovarian, breast, and lung cancers. This workshop is the 14th time they've brought this format together.
