Community festival celebrating Ghanaian culture with traditional drumming and dance, live artist performances, a Kente and smock fashion showcase and a Jollof rice competition.
Ghana Day in Tampa Bay comes to Rowlett Park on Saturday, November 7, from 10 AM to 5:30 PM. The Ghanaian Association of Tampa Bay puts it on as a community celebration of Ghanaian culture, heritage, and the contributions of Ghana and the African diaspora through music, food, fashion, history, and the arts.
The day is built around a few distinct things. There's traditional drumming and dance, live artist performances, and a Kente and smock fashion showcase. The Jollof rice competition is one of the highlights, and the food experience goes beyond that with dishes like red red, waakye, kenkey, and kontomire stew. The music side of things touches on Highlife, Hiplife, and Afrobeat.
There's a historical thread running through the festival, too. It traces Ghana's history from the Portuguese arrival in 1471 through to independence in 1957, led by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and the country becoming a republic in 1960. The Ghanaian Association of Tampa Bay describes Rowlett Park as a welcoming space for people to connect, learn, and celebrate together, with the day aimed at promoting cultural awareness, unity, and meaningful connections across Tampa Bay and beyond.
