Free compost giveaway for City of Tampa Utilities customers to help lawns and landscapes stay healthy during the dry season, with lawn care tips.
The City of Tampa's Water Department is giving away free compost at Plymouth Playground in Tampa Heights, starting Friday, October 23. It's a straightforward deal: if you're a current City of Tampa Utilities customer, you can pick up to 30 gallons of compost for freeβthat's about six 5-gallon buckets. There's one registration per household, so if you've got a yard that could use some love, it's worth the trip.
The giveaway runs from 9 AM to 4 PM on Friday, and if there's still compost left, they'll keep going on Saturday, October 24, starting at 9 AM. You'll need to bring your own containers, and you're responsible for lifting and transporting the compost yourself, so come prepared with buckets or bins that can handle the weight. The city also asks that you read through the provided information on compost and topdressing before you arrive at your designated time.
Beyond the free soil, there's a practical side to the day. Staff will be on hand to explain composting, topdressing, and how to keep a lawn healthy. The whole thing is run by the Water Department's Conservation & Outreach Team, and the goal is to help residents improve their soil's ability to hold water. That makes a difference during the dry spring season, when keeping your lawn and landscape healthy helps you save water under the city's once-a-week watering restrictions.
