Family-friendly holiday dance spectacle that blends hip-hop with Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker score, directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker comes to The Fabulous Fox Theatre on Thursday, December 17, at 7:30 PM. It's a family-friendly holiday mash-up that takes Tchaikovsky's 130-year-old ballet and gives it a modern twist, swapping the 19th-century German setting for contemporary New York City. The production blends hip-hop dance with the original score, and uses digital graffiti and visuals to shift the scenery.
On stage, the show is hosted and MC'd by hip-hop pioneer Kurtis Blow, who scored the first certified gold rap record in 1980 and wrote "Christmas Rappin'." He's joined by an on-stage DJ and an electric violinist. The whole thing is directed, choreographed, and co-created by Jennifer Weber, an Emmy winner and two-time Tony and Olivier nominee who also choreographed the hit musical & Juliet. She created the show in 2013 with writer Mike Fitelson, and it's produced by Eva Price, a three-time Tony and two-time Olivier award winner. Since its debut, it's been performed more than 250 times across 70 cities.
It's a contemporary dance spectacle that keeps the music you know from The Nutcracker but changes the movement and the backdrop. The digital graffiti is a big part of thatβit's how the show moves the story from old Germany to modern New York. Between the hip-hop choreography, the live DJ, and the electric violin, it's a far cry from a traditional ballet, though the Tchaikovsky is still the foundation. It's built as a family show, so it works for kids and adults alike.
