George E. Mylonas Lecture in Classical Art and Archaeology by Maria Liston on the Battle of Chaeronea, at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
Maria Liston takes the stage at the Saint Louis Art Museum on Sunday, October 25, for The Dead of Chaeronea: Unearthing a Lost Battlefield. It's the George E. Mylonas Lecture in Classical Art and Archaeology, and the whole thing centers on the Battle of Chaeronea, so if you've got any interest in ancient history or archaeology, this is exactly the kind of thing you'll want to be in the room for.
Liston's talk is part of the museum's larger fall program, and it's not the only thing happening around the building these days. If you're planning to spend the afternoon there, you can work your way through a few other shows. There's Unsettling the City: Julie Mehretu's Epigraph, by the Ethiopian-American abstract artist Julie Mehretu, and Juanita McNeely, by the American feminist painter Juanita McNeely. Both are running alongside the lecture, so you can easily pair the talk with a walk through the galleries.
Beyond those, the museum is showing Osage Art: Articulations of Wahzhazhe Ways and Quilts and Coverlets: American Needlework in White. There's also Women Impressionists and the Land, an exhibition that builds on the museum's long history with the genre—Art in America described a 1990 Impressionism show here as "an absolute smash," so the museum has a bit of a track record with the style. Between the lecture and the exhibitions, there's plenty to see in one trip.
