Live taping of the public health podcast 'Why Should I Trust You?' with its panel of experts at the WashU School of Public Health.
Why Should I Trust You? is taping a live episode at Holmes Lounge on Tuesday, October 27, from 4 PM to 6 PM. For nearly two years, the podcast has brought together people who disagree about science, medicine, public health, and the institutions that shape our lives, asking what went wrong during COVID and why Americans came away with such different interpretations of the pandemic.
The show's format is a bit of a thought experiment: it sets a citizen-expert committee in the year 2030, called to advise the president on a hypothetical new virus. The panel has to make decisions in real time as the facts shift, while the audience plays the role of the American public. The conversation surfaces some of the most contested decisions of the last pandemic and how to balance safety with liberty.
For this taping, the panel includes Dr. Nahid Bhadelia (MD, MALD), Jeffery W. Hutt, Dr. Katherine Wells (DrPH, MPH), and David Zweig, with Dr. Mark Abdelmalek engaging the audience. The session follows a conversation the hosts had with Sandro Galea, dean of the WashU Bursky School of Public Health, who opened the school less than two years ago and invited the show to campus. The recording will be released as a podcast episode and on YouTube at a later date.
