Docent-led architectural tour of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, exploring its Byzantine-inspired design and mosaics with architect John C. Guenther.
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is hosting a docent-led tour on Saturday, October 24, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. It's part of the 2026 Fall Tour, and it's led by John C. Guenther, FAIA, an architect who's spent a lot of time with this building. He wrote The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis: An Illustrated Timeline, so he's not just walking you through the space—he's coming at it with a deep knowledge of how it actually came together.
If you've been inside before, you know the mosaics are the first thing that hit you. They cover the interior with more than 40 million pieces of glass tesserae, and the tour spends a good deal of time there. Beyond the mosaics, you'll get a look at the Byzantine-inspired design, which is what gives the whole place its distinct shape and feel. Guenther's background as an architect means he can talk through the structure and the design choices in a way that makes the history feel concrete rather than just a list of dates.
It's one of the city's most significant landmarks, and this is a chance to see it with someone who knows its timeline inside and out. The tour runs an hour and a half, so there's room to really look around and ask questions as you go.
