An immersive Pop Art exhibition by Rommie Martinez featuring her 'No Time to Lose' series, with augmented reality and an undersea theme.
Rommie Martinez is showing No Time to Lose at Power Creative, 3221 Oak Hill Ave, through October 25. It's a new Pop Art-style series from a St. Louis artist and author who was born and raised here, and the show is set up more like an experience than a standard gallery hang.
Martinez spent years working as an illustrator and a hair and makeup artist before returning to painting in 2020. She started painting as a form of therapy after two family losses, then earned her scuba diving certification and spent the next five years diving every year, visiting friends around the world. Out of that period came ten paintings and a children's book that combines them, following a heroine called Eco Girl who is devoted to protecting endangered marine species.
The show is staged as a walk through a comic book, with text written next to each painting telling a story. There's also an augmented reality layer: you can download a phone program that shows each painting animated live. The gallery itself transforms into an immersive undersea world with whale songs and moody lighting, so you're walking through the environment the paintings come from rather than just looking at them on a wall.
