Lecture by the Saint Louis Art Museum and Nancy Mowll Mathews on Mary Cassatt's works inspired by her country life.
Saint Louis Art Museum is hosting a lecture on Mary Cassatt on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 11 AM. The talk is titled Mary Cassatt: The Woman in the Country, and it's a joint presentation between SLAM and Nancy Mowll Mathews.
Most of us know Cassatt for her paintings of mothers and children, but this session looks at a different side of her work: the pieces inspired by her time living in the country. It's a chance to see how her surroundings shaped her painting, and to hear about the specific works that grew out of that rural life. If you've only ever seen her most famous portraits, this is a good way to get a fuller picture of what she was doing.
Nancy Mowll Mathews leads the discussion, so you'll be hearing from someone who knows the work inside and out rather than just a general overview. The lecture is held at the museum itself, which makes it easy to go from the talk straight into the galleries if you want to spend some more time with the art afterward.
