You, Me & Debussy

Drew Crawford brings You, Me & Debussy to the Turner Sims (52) Main Auditorium on Thursday 17 September, from 18:00 to 19:00. It's part of the British Science Festival, and it's a performance that reimagines the melodies of the 19th-century French composer Claude Debussy.

The piece works across two pianos in different spaces, so you're immersed in those reimagined melodies rather than just watching from a seat. It's described as a living, breathing musical performance, and Crawford himself is from the University of Southampton's Department of Music. The result, he says, feels both electronic and organic, familiar and estranged.

Once the music finishes, the evening shifts. You'll hear how neuroscience, deep listening and an awareness of the environment interact to create the encounter you've just had. It's that second half that ties the performance to the science side of the festival, turning the listening experience into something you can actually talk about afterwards.
