Down for the Count Swing Orchestra bring their festive show Swing Into Christmas to Turner Sims on Saturday 19 December. It's a 30-piece swing orchestra, with strings included, led by director and presenter Mike Paul-Smith. They're touring their Christmas programme, and this is the Southampton date.
The set is built around the big band sound of the mid-century, with the strings adding a layer you don't usually get in a standard swing outfit. They're recreating the songs of Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, all in that full-orchestra style. The programme mixes festive standards like Let It Snow, This Christmas and The Most Wonderful Time of the Year with non-Christmas classics, New York, New York among them, so it's not just a run of carols.
There are two performances on the day, a matinee at 14:30 and an evening show at 19:30, so you can pick the one that fits your afternoon or evening. Both run for two hours and forty minutes, with an interval in the middle. It's an all-ages show, and the mix of festive and non-festive songs makes it easy to bring along people who aren't necessarily into the Christmas songbook.

Tickets are £48 full price, £33 for students and £23 for under-18s. The venue is Turner Sims, part of the University of Southampton, at SO17 1BJ.
