Claire Fuller reads from her novel Hunger and Thirst in conversation with Carole Burns, with music by her son Henry Ayling.
Claire Fuller is at Turner Sims on Tuesday 29 September, reading from her latest novel, Hunger and Thirst. It's part of the Writers in Conversation series, which is hosted by Carole Burns, an author and associate professor of Creative Writing at the University of Southampton. The series is sponsored by the university's English department and has brought in names like Helen Macdonald, Xiaolu Guo, Jennifer Egan and Patrice Lawrence.
Hunger and Thirst is set in the 1980s at the Winchester School of Art, where Fuller herself earned a BA in Sculpture. The story follows Ursula, a girl in care whose dare haunts her decades later, when she's an acclaimed artist. Fuller was born in Oxfordshire in 1967 and spent years working in marketing before she started writing at forty; she's since won the 2021 Costa Novel Award and the Desmond Elliott Prize.
It's an amplified performance, so it's more than just a reading. Fuller reads from the novel and talks about its origins and its relationship to music with Carole Burns. Her son, the Bristol-based singer-songwriter Henry Ayling, wrote music in response to the book and performs it on fingerstyle acoustic guitar throughout the evening.
