A special tribute radio show on Angel Radio, hosted by Pete Cross, to honour the career of DJ Johnny Dymond.
Angel Radio is running a special tribute show for Johnny Dymond on Tuesday 11 August at 2pm, hosted by Pete Cross. It's a radio broadcast rather than a live gig, so you can tune in from wherever you are in the city.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, Dymond was one of Southampton's most well-known DJs, with a career that stretched back to the 1960s. He built his following on a long-running residency at the Royal Pier Ballroom and on bookings in Portsmouth's naval establishments, and he was widely regarded as 'the number one personality DJ in Hampshire'. He was a pioneer of the personality DJ format โ the kind of presenter who was as much a part of the show as the records they played.
That personality took him well beyond the local circuit. He often supported the biggest Radio One DJs at live shows, made several appearances on BBC Radio One himself, and featured in numerous Southern TV and BBC drama series. Throughout it all, he was represented by the Southampton agents Avenue Artistes, which is still run by Terry Rolph.

He eventually retired at 65 and relocated to Spain, where he lives with his partner Jacquie. This show is a look back at that career, with Pete Cross hosting the tribute on Angel Radio this Tuesday at 2pm.
