WILD: The Drone Light Show comes to the Utilita Bowl on Sunday 13 December, a large-scale drone show that takes over the night sky. It's put on by Celestial, the drone art studio that's worked on Eurovision, Glastonbury and the New Year's Eve celebrations in London, and it's a far cry from your usual night out in Southampton.
The show uses hundreds of illuminated drones to draw animals from four different wild worlds — the desert, the ocean, the arctic and the jungle — all synced to a cinematic soundtrack. The drones shift and reform in the air to create these shapes, so the animals don't just appear; they move and change right in front of you. Celestial describes it as an immersive experience, and the whole thing is built around connecting the audience with the animal kingdom through technology.
It's not a new arrival, though. The show launched in 2023, and the partnership between Celestial and the production company Yuup has brought some of the UK's first ticketed drone shows to the public, drawing over 200,000 visitors across previous runs. One thing that's come up in the reviews from those seasons is that there aren't any loud noises involved, which makes it a bit easier to bring along younger ones or anyone who'd rather avoid a wall of sound. The focus stays on the aerial formations and the choreographed moments.
