The Wedding Present perform live on their Seamonsters 35th Anniversary Tour at The 1865 in Southampton.
The Wedding Present play The 1865 on Thursday 15 October, as part of their Seamonsters 35th Anniversary Tour. It's a particular kind of night: a full-album run-through of one of their most known records, with the newer songs tucked in around it.
If you're not familiar with the name, they've been around since 1985, when they formed in Leeds. Back in the late eighties, they were one of the most talked-about indie bands in Britain, and they earned that reputation by doing things most bands wouldn't. For their first major-label release, they recorded a set of Ukrainian folk songs; for another stretch, they put out a single on the first Monday of every month for a whole year. It's that streak of doing things on their own terms that still defines them.
Over the decades, the line-up has shifted — members have come and gone — but the core of the band has always been David Gedge. He's the original songwriter and the only constant member, and he's the one who's kept the project moving forward. On this tour, he'll be playing the songs that people know best alongside newer material, so the set reaches back across the band's history rather than sticking to one era.

Seamonsters came out in 1990, so this tour marks thirty-five years since it first landed. Hearing it played in full is the main draw here, and it's a good place to start if you're coming to them late. Doors open at 19:00 at The 1865, and tickets are £33.00, which includes the booking fee.
