Screening of the classic 1980 psychological horror film The Shining by Stanley Kubrick at Showcase Cinema de Lux.
The Shining is coming to Showcase Cinema de Lux in Southampton on Saturday 1 August. It's a screening of Stanley Kubrick's horror film, so if you've got the afternoon free and fancy a trip to the cinema, this is the one.
For those who haven't seen it, The Shining is Kubrick's 1980 take on Stephen King's novel. It follows a family who take over a remote hotel in the mountains for the winter, only for the father to slowly lose his grip on reality. It's a slow-burn kind of horror, more about the atmosphere and the creeping dread than jump scares, and it's widely considered one of the best horror films ever made.
Seeing it on the big screen is a different experience from watching it at home. Kubrick was obsessive about how his films looked, and The Shining is full of wide, symmetrical shots and long, tracking movements through the hotel's corridors that really work when they're projected. The scale of the Overlook Hotel feels much more imposing when it fills the whole screen, and the sound design—the echoing footsteps, the distant screams—hits harder in a cinema.
