Sonic launch of The Ocean Remembers, a new musical work by Jason Singh and Yazz Ahmed, marking the start of the British Science Festival 2026.
Jason Singh is bringing The Ocean Remembers to Turner Sims on Wednesday 16 September, starting at 19:00. It's the sonic launch of a new musical work he's put together with composer and trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, and it marks the start of the British Science Festival 2026, which the University of Southampton is hosting this year.
The piece is built from music, sound and scientific research, and it looks at the evolving human and more-than-human life of our blue planet. It draws on four specific areas of marine and maritime research: the lives of fish recorded within their otoliths, the foraging habits of Fin whales, microplastics trapped in coral, and the maritime journeys of people in deep time. The performance moves across time and through the bodies of ocean dwellers, bearing witness to humanity's impact on marine life, and combines electronic soundscapes, vocal textures, spoken word and live instruments. Singh is a sound artist, composer and nature beatboxer, and he worked on this in partnership with Ahmed, with Turner Sims and the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute bringing it to life.

On the night, Singh and Ahmed are joined by emerging musicians from the University of Southampton's Department of Music, student vocalists from Itchen College and MC Baby Panna. The launch is followed by a series of short talks and an informal drinks session, so there's a bit more to it than just the performance. Entry is free, and it all kicks off at 19:00 at Turner Sims.
