Paul Lewis | Mozart II

Paul Lewis returns to Turner Sims on Thursday 24 September, the second instalment of his Mozart series. He's back for another evening of solo piano, this time pairing two of Mozart's sonatas with works by Chopin and Schubert.

The Mozart half of the programme brings together two very different moods. The Piano Sonata No 17 in B flat major, K570 is the restrained, intimate one, while the Piano Sonata No 13 in B flat major, K333 is more charming and operatic. Hearing them side by side lets you see how much ground the composer covered within the same key.

From there, the evening moves into Schubert and Chopin. Schubert's 3 Klavierstücke, D946 was written in the final year of his life and is built on sudden contrasts between light and darkness. Chopin's Polonaise No 1 in C sharp minor, Op 26/1 is a Polish national dance he wrote while living in exile in Paris, and his Nocturnes, Op 32 date from his most poetic period. Between the two, the programme shifts from the classical clarity of Mozart into the more romantic, introspective territory of the 19th century.

It starts at 19:30. Tickets are Band A £37, Band B £32, and Band C £15, with Friends' discounts bringing those down to £33.30, £28.80, and £13.50. Students and under 18s pay £10 for Bands B and C, and schools are also £10.
