Japanese math-rock and post-rock instrumental trio Paranoid Void perform at The Joiners, supported by God Alone.
Paranoid Void play The Joiners on Tuesday 13 October, headlining a night that brings together two very different kinds of instrumental rock. They're an Osaka-based trio, and the set will draw on the math rock, post-rock and progressive rock they've been working with on their album travels in my universe and singles like 'MASAYUME' and 'High fever'.
If you're not familiar with the math rock side of things, it's the kind of music that lives in the odd time signatures and shifting rhythms — the sort of stuff that keeps you listening closely rather than just nodding along. They build their sound around complex rhythms and detailed arrangements, using them to pull together shifting soundscapes that change as the songs go on. It's instrumental, so the focus stays on the playing and the way the tracks unfold.
Opening for them is God Alone, whose sound sits in a different place entirely. They blend post-metal and black metal — a combination you can hear on ETC — and it adds a heavier, atmospheric counterpoint to the night. Between the two, you've got the intricate, shifting side of instrumental rock on one hand and the denser, darker side on the other.
