Nu Civilisation Orchestra brings Miles Davis' soundtrack to life live, accompanying John Akomfrah's documentary on Stuart Hall.
Nu Civilisation Orchestra are at Turner Sims on Saturday 3 October, bringing Miles Davis' soundtrack to life live. The evening pairs John Akomfrah's 2013 documentary The Stuart Hall Project with its soundtrack performed in the room by a five-piece Nu Civilisation Orchestra Ensemble. The film is a portrait of Stuart Hall, the pioneering thinker and co-founder of New Left Review, and it's built from archival footage and Hall's own reflections on identity, race and belonging. The music was written by Miles Davis, and here it's played live as the film runs.
The ensemble is led by musical director Peter Edwards, with Mark Kavuma on trumpet. Nu Civilisation Orchestra was founded in 2008 by Gary Crosby OBE and has built a reputation as a shape-shifting ensemble: they made their BBC Proms debut in 2019 and toured a celebration of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On in 2021, alongside reinterpretations of Ellington, Joni Mitchell, Mingus, Bowie and Stan Getz. This performance is amplified and presented by Tomorrow's Warriors.

It starts early: there's a pre-concert talk at 19:00, and the main event follows at 20:00. Tickets are £30 for Band A (£27 for Friends), £25 for Band B (£22.50 for Friends), and £10 for Band C (£9 for Friends). Students and under-18s pay £10 for Bands B and C, and schools are £10.
