Chamber music concert with I Musicanti, directed by Leon Bosch, featuring pianist Peter Donohoe.
Leon Bosch and I Musicanti are playing Turner Sims on Thursday 8 October, with pianist Peter Donohoe joining them. It's a chamber music evening, and the programme brings together three different composers: Beethoven's Piano Quartet Op 16, J.B. Cramer's Piano Quintet No 3 in B-flat, and Schubert's Quintet in A 'Trout'. The 'Trout' is the one most people will recognise, but the Cramer is a bit rarer, so it's a mix of the familiar and the less-heard.
I Musicanti is a mixed-instrument chamber ensemble made up of some of the UK's most experienced musicians, hand-picked by its artistic director, the double-bass virtuoso Leon Bosch. He describes the group's focus as music that has been lost, found or overlooked, which fits the Cramer quintet well enough. Bosch himself spent over 30 years playing with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Philharmonia and the Hallé before moving into conducting in 2015. He grew up in South Africa, the son of political activist Jonas Fred Bosch.
Joining them on piano is Peter Donohoe, born in Manchester in 1953, who studied with Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod in Paris. He's a well-known name in his own right, and having him on the keys for these three works puts a fair bit of weight behind the piano parts. Between Bosch's ensemble and Donohoe, there's a lot of experience on one stage.

The concert starts at 19:30. Tickets are Band A £30 (£27 Friends), Band B £25 (£22.50 Friends), and Band C £10 (£9 Friends). Students and under-18s pay £10 for Bands B and C, and schools are also £10. If you're a Friend of the venue, you'll get a bit off the top of the first two bands.
