Live music session with Joe Martin presenting his album Alone In Valentine, a blend of 70s American country and folk.
Joe Martin plays Hanger Farm Arts Centre on Thursday 10 September, bringing his second studio album, Alone In Valentine, to the stage. It's a live session centred on the record, which draws on 1970s American country and folk in the vein of Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Bob Dylan.
There's a bit of a story behind the album. It was recorded at the Campbell residence in Nashville alongside Cal Campbell and Cornelius Webb — the sons of Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb — and mostly cut live over seven days. The title came from a co-write with filmmaker and songwriter Steve Anderson, whose film 10 Year Town follows Nashville's singer-songwriter scene. It grew out of a story Anderson heard about a lonely woman travelling through Southern Colorado and Texas, whose final verse reveals she's widowed and visiting the places they'd promised to see together, alone.
Martin describes the record's mantra as 'made by humans, for humans', recorded the old-fashioned way without shortcuts or trickery, as a counterpoint to a world of AI music and overbearing production. That's the same spirit he brings to the stage: a 21st-century Americana and country troubadour playing his songs live. The show fills the venue's 18th-century converted timber barn, so it's a room that suits the acoustic, rootsy side of things.
