Guided Tour: Civic Centre Clock Tower

The Civic Centre Clock Tower is opening its doors for a guided tour on Saturday 3 October, and it's one of those Southampton landmarks you see every day but almost never get to actually enter. The tour takes you up the tower, where you'll climb 215 steps via a spiral staircase across seven levels. Along the way, you'll hear the story of how the tower was built, and at the top, you get views over the city that you just can't see from the street.

There's something new for 2026: the chance to stand in the bell chamber while the bells are ringing. It's subject to them being in operation, and they can reach around 85 decibels, so ear defenders are on hand if you need them. It's a proper look inside a part of the building that usually stays hidden.

Before you book, there are a few practical things to keep in mind. The walk is suitable for over-10s, and you'll need proper footwear rather than open-toe sandals or heels, as parts of the tour are outdoors. It's not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights, mobility concerns, breathing difficulties, heart-condition medication, or poor fitness—the 215 steps are the main event, after all.
